And He charged them, saying, take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. Mark 8:15
Jesus warned his disciples about two types of leaven. The leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of Herod. I could not understand what a Pharisee could have in common with Herod, yet Jesus mentioned both in the same sentence. After thinking about it I came to one simplistic conclusion: Herod and the Pharisees, both asked for signs. But both already knew in their own hearts that no matter how many signs Jesus produced they would not be changed into believers. From the very beginning they never wanted anything to do with Jesus, both preferred Rome.
They are opposite routes that end up in the same location: away from God. Because one extreme loved the LAW they could never love Jesus. Similarly because the other extreme hated the LAW he also could never love Jesus. Their pitfall was to ask for an external miracle, that they may believe, instead of an inner miracle so that they may believe.
Jesus warned his disciples. Jesus is also warning me. Am I more infallibe than the Pharisees or less evil than Herod? Not in the least...So the warning remains, and I must make a note to my heart, to honestly ask for a miracle inside of me so that I may believe in Him today, more than I believed yesterday, that I may have greater faith. Work a big miracle inside of me Jesus that I may LOVE more today than I did yesterday. Show me a sign Jesus, when I am about to fall, so that I come back to You, and not to law or to the lack of it.
